History

The history of Harkaway is deeply rooted in the indigenous heritage of the Bunurong and Wurundjeri peoples, who once inhabited the area. These indigenous communities lived a traditional lifestyle, relying on seasonal movements and hunting and gathering practices. Evidence of their presence can be found in the discovery of stone axe heads at Bald Hill.

In the 1850s, Harkaway became a settlement for German immigrants. Originally planning to establish a German settlement at Thomastown, these settlers were drawn to the fertile land south of King Road. They built small timber cottages and engaged in small-scale agriculture, primarily focused on clearing land, growing crops such as wheat, oats, and potatoes, and actively participating in the dairy industry. While Harkaway never officially became a declared townsite, the settlers erected various buildings including a Lutheran church, a school, a post office, and a community hall, which still stand as testaments to the suburb’s early days.

Present Day

Harkaway, nestled in the northeast corner of the City of Casey, offers residents a serene and close-knit community atmosphere. Surrounded by Robinson, Halleur, and Harkaway Roads in the west, Boundary Road in the north, and Cardinia Creek in the east, Harkaway enjoys a picturesque location with natural boundaries. The suburb is bordered by Berwick, Victoria, below Dalton Reserve in the south.

While most services and amenities are easily accessible from nearby Berwick and Narre Warren, Harkaway maintains its rural charm. The primary means of accessing Harkaway is via Heatherton Road, which becomes King Road upon entering the suburb. However, it’s important to note that, aside from Harkaway Road, Marks Court, St Fort Court, and portions of King Road and Noack Road, the majority of roads outside the main town area remain unsealed.

Harkaway offers a range of community facilities and activities. Harkaway Primary School caters for approximately 200 students and provides a quality education within a welcoming environment. The suburb’s community hall serves as a gathering place for local events and activities, while tennis courts provide opportunities for friendly competition and recreational pursuits. For nature enthusiasts, Harkaway boasts numerous walking and equestrian trails, allowing residents to explore and appreciate the area’s natural beauty.

While public transport options directly serving Harkaway are limited, the suburb’s peaceful ambience and idyllic surroundings more than compensate for this. Residents can enjoy the tranquillity and escape the fast-paced urban lifestyle, while still benefiting from the nearby amenities and services provided by neighbouring towns.
